The Secondary Education Department is committed to serving the needs of all student at
the secondary level by providing exciting programs that embrace and enhance the ability of
all learners. In recent years, North Carolina has adopted stringent course
requirements designed to increase student achievement through the North Carolina ABCs
Accountability Plan. Secondary classrooms in Cumberland County are increasing
student achievement by providing the classroom teachers with resources, training, and
support for innovative and dynamic approaches to learning. Successful students
prepared for post-secondary experiences come from classrooms with teachers who are sharing
in the decision-making at their schools. Toward this effort, recent emphasis has
been placed on reducing class sizes at the secondary level and providing teachers the
resources needed to continue our efforts towards excellence.
The 2008-09 graduate survey showed 3,403
graduates. 84% of whom planned to attend post-secondary schools, with 51% whom
planned to attend four-year colleges or universities, 33% whom planned to
attend a two-year college, 6% planned to join the workforce and 8% planned to
enter the military.
